My Two New 'Civil' Boys!

Went to Walmart to get some cat food and came acrossed these two. One I had to get because he was soo beautiful, the other I got because he is a special needs fish. I think they are brothers, they look almost the same!
I am a Civil War buff, so I chose to name these two after some of 1860's famous figures.
Joshua Fry Speed (Named after Lincoln's best friend):

And my special needs boy, William Herndon (named after Lincoln's Law Partner):

(Any suggestions as to what is wrong with him and how to treat it? He cannot even use his right pectoral at all.)

Beautiful fish! You are right, they could be brothers, they are both cute. I love the special needs fishy's face. Congragulations, they're cute!
His fin looks totally shredded, and it almost looks like his gill is damaged too... is he swimming normally and acting healthy? If so, then he will probably be fine, but if not, sorry but I don't think he will last very long... it almost looks like his pectoral was ripped from his body and the muscle tissue was shredded! EEK! I've never seen this before, but I'd mamke sure his tank stays very clean and use a little aquarium salt. What size tank is he in?

He is in a 1 gallon hospital tank right now.
He refuses to eat and does not swim around much, just stays at the surfae in the corner.
I have no idea what happened to him...
Also, his right gill (same side as injury) is very veiny and red.

It does look like an injury and not a lot you can do except preventive care-that being...clean water-if he is having problems swimming you may want to lower the water level, no filter or water movement...also, add something that he can rest on near the surface-like a broad leaf or something.....usually fish will adapt and be fine once recovered.

I would stay on top of water quality-with daily 50-100% water changes....with or without aquarium salt-if it seem to be swollen you may want to use Epsom salt 1-2tsp/gal for 5-10 days and adding tannins can help as well-don't go too high on the water temp-I would stay in the low normal range until completely healed-
Feed a good quality diet in small frequent meals-hopefully once he settles in he will start to eat-you could also try adding fresh garlic juice to the food and see if this will stimulate his appetite once he settles in....

He needs time, clean water, good nutrition and low stress environment.....

Good luck and keep us posted....

Well, right now he is in a low traffic part of the house. He does not have a filter (so no current to fight).
I do have some epsom salt, so I will try that.
I normally do 50% water changes for a 1 gallon already.
I will keep everyone posted.

I wonder what could have caused his injury?

Someone might have put him in another betta's bowl to see them fight.
Hate it when people do that.

Well, just gave him his first epsom salt treatment a few hours ago.
He is still not moving much. Though it looks like the swelling has already gone down alot. Also, it seems the damaged pectoral has completely fallen off.

Oh my gosh! I'm glad the swelling has gone down some, but if the whole fin is gone I don't think there is a very good chance it will grow back. I'm so sorry, I don't mean to get you down or anything!! I really hope he recovers somehow, I love his little face! How's Mr. Speed?
