add filter before or after

Currently 1 betta in a 10gal

I'll hopefully be adding an unknown number of ghost shrimp and a mystery snail or two. I'd like to add more fish but I've read that most of them require pre-cycled tanks.

I'll be getting a Whisper 2-10i. Do I need to cycle my tank first or is it possible to do it after?

My funds and ability to get to the store for these things are currently limited.

:O
I've never seen such a color on a betta, he's so pretty/cool!
Post more pics? :D
His tank should be cycled before getting shrimp and snails, they are very sensitive to water quality. Betta too, should have a precycled tank but they can be just fine as long as you use Prime conditioner with frequent water changes. Get a test kit, API is really great.
Do you have a heater too?
A thermometer is great for knowing the temp even with a heater.

He's dark blue except in the camera flash or other bright light. I change the water quite often and vacuum the gravel since it's just him in a 10 gal all by himself. His thermometer is his lover and yes there's a heater. I'm adding things slowly so as to keep my boyfriend from worrying about the cost of our fishy. I can get that filter here in town but the other critters are in another town that I won't be getting to for a while anyway. The tankmates are suppose to be for my birthday. I'm sneaky like that.

You could rearrange them and see if there is a way it doesn't bug you so much, but I don't know if that will help tons....
The purple log is cool ~

what If you took one of the smaller plants off the black base and attached it to the arch, or the log?

Make sure to have a bowl ready so you can get him out if the cycle gets out of hand.

On males one of the signs of high ammonia and nitrite is they'll extend their swollen gill covers some. If you see their gill covers or especially gill distending all the time they have a problem with the water.

The purple log is a leftover from a hamster years ago. Maybe I'll just go get the filter sometime soon. I don't know if I trust the betta bulbs from our local store though because they may have been on the shelf for quite a while. I"m trying to redo everything a bit at a time.

I kept the 1/5 gallon critter keeper type thing he was in before the tank, and I actually have a second one of those with duct tape on it that still holds water.
