Question Bowl Buddies and Ammonia Issues

My water here at school is really bad quality, and no matter how much I change the water (100% once every 2 days, fins still curling more), my fish's fins curl and get pin holes :(

So I assume ammonia is in the tap water, so I've now added API Stress Coat and Jungle Labs Bowl Buddies to attempt to make the water safer. I don't think Stress Coat detoxes ammonia, and so I'm hoping the Bowl Buddies tablets will.

Has anyone used these tablets or does anyone have any tips on how to take the ammonia out of the tap?

2 words : seachem's prime

super good conditioner, and treats the ammonia almost instantly.

I would get Prime, but I can't find it ANYWHERE :( :(

And there are no pet stores within an hour of my college, and I checked all the ones back home :(

I just have a Walmart... *sigh*

Prime all the way!

I personally haven't used it. Many others have though, and it renders ammonia into a harmless form!

EDIT: Just saw your post. I think you can buy it online.

Lol, maybe I'll ask for Prime for my birthday XD Maybe I can convince someone to order me some :P

But since it's a couple months away and I have no credit cards or anything to order stuff offline (I'm one of the few people that still pays everything in cash :P), what should I do?

Any other products out there that detoxify ammonia and are easy to get a hold of?

Hmm.... I think.. (runs off to get card) Aha!

According to the API testing kit card, battle ammonia with one of these:

ammo lock
ammo-carb
ammo-chips
stress zyme

No clue what most of those are but... there you go.

I will check for ammo lock when I go home. I searched at Walmart this evening and they only ammonia product they had were tablets! Very disappointing :/

Wait... Walmart had that stress-zyme stuff! I was afraid to buy it though because it looks like a filter is needed... I'm still just doing regular water changes since I only have a 2.5 gallon. Do I need a filter for that?

Not sure... I don't think you need it, though. It supposedly helps create beneficial bacteria... I consider it LIES. I think it's still safe to use without a filter though.

Ugh, I put that stuff in my tank while it was cycling and all it did was condition the water a bit and make it foggier. Not helpful at all with cycling. Aren't I gullable...

Eww. I think I'll pass on the bacteria stuff then. Hehe, I consider all the bacteria stuff in bottles to fake too :P

I guess I'll see how these Bowl Buddies tablets work, and keep looking for Ammo Lock or Prime... *sigh*

On a side note, Victor seems much more active, almost hyper, now that the Bowl Buddies has been in the tank for awhile. Hopefully this means it's working :3

I've used Bowl Buddies, and can't say I have much experience.
I use/used them when I'd clean the tank (I have a 1.5), the water would always be cloudy the next day. On the third day it'd be clear again.

Thats about all the experience I've had.
