Exclamation Help! Did I kill him with kindness?

Hi all. Yesterday I got Buddy a heater for his 2.5 gallon. He had been fine and happy prior to this but everything I read insisted he needed a heater.
He hated it, and spent 1/2 the day yesterday flaring at it. Last night he seemed to get very lazy, spending a lot of time just hanging by a side of the tank...I just assumed he was tired, but I removed the heater just in case the water temp change was too much.

This morning he was floating on his side. Alive, though. He'll swim around if you prompt him. I removed him from his tank and put him back in the cup I got him in and he has remained upright in there.

WHAT DO I DO? Just wait it out?

Carla

He may have swim bladder disorder though that may not be the case. Can you give some more info like the tank temp, what you feed him, etc? Then more people may be able to help you. :)

Thanks for the speedy reply! Gotta love forums!

He eats the freeze dried blood worms and sometimes a big of shrimp flake. His temp right now is probably 71ish. He's been upright since I moved him to the cup...just sorta hanging by the top like the fish store betta do. He flits around when I move the cup. Wait, actually, if he sits for too long, he'll start to float sideways and then he corrects himself.

This came on all of sudden. Yesterday he was FINE.

Hmm. You definitely need to adjust the temperature up to ATLEAST 76*. anywhere from 76* to 82* is acceptable. With food, IME you should feed a staple diet of flakes or pellets specially for bettas. Use blood worms as a treat only. I heard somewhere that blood worms premote Swim bladder disorder. I am guessing that thats what your betta is effected with, though I'm not sure. You should try fasting him for 2-3 days and I hope he gets better. Welcome 2 the forum! :)

How warm was his water when the heater was in? He may have been shocked by the sudden temperature change.

Welcome to the forum...sorry you are having problems......have a few questions....

In the 2.5gal tank-is it filtered, live plants, additive used, how much and how often are the water changes, how long have you had him....to understand the temp was 71F you added the heater-this stressed him it appeared, you removed the heated and he was found on his side.....you QT him and he will stay upright but float to his side on occasion....right....how is his appetite?

Thanks. He's a picky eater, he's never eaten a pellet and is pretty medium on the flakes. He likes to take a bite, swim a lap, take a bite, swim a lap, etc and by that time, the flakes sink.

I'm wondering that spending all day so close to the heater could be the cause? Not sure why that would mess up his swim bladder, but he was fine before that.

I'll fast him and hope for the best.

Hi Fishlady - thanks for responding.
His 2.5 was not heated or filtered. I'm moving him to a 5 gal heated/filtered if he makes it.
He has a couple live plants and I add Betta Bowl plus to his tap water.
His last water change was Monday. Probably 90%....I siphoned most everything out and refilled.

I've had him for a month and his water temp is room temp...about 72-75ish by our thermostat. He's been totally fine until I added the heated yesterday and he freaked out all day flaring at it.
His appetite has been fine. I haven't tried to feed him today.

ETA - I put a tiny speck of shrimp flake in his cup, and nudged it to rouse him and he ate it. He's just so listless. :(

I would start a 10 day Epsom salt(Not aquarium salt) treatment on him.

Put him in a small QT container that can be floated in the heated tank (attached to the side so it doesn't sink)
Get a clean 1gal jug and fill with dechlorinated water of like temp and add 1tsp/gal Epsom salt(Not aquarium salt) use this water for 100% daily water changes for 2 days-then increase the Epsom salt 2tsp/gal and continue the 100% daily water changes with this water for 7 more days-pre mixing the treatment water will help make water changes and correct dosage easier

Hold all food for the first 3 days and then offer half feeding twice a day during treatment

Maintain water temp in the 76-78F range

You can also add tannins to the Epsom salt treatment water from either-naturally dried and fallen from the tree Oak leaf (10-12 crushed/gal) or Indian almond leaf or blackwater extract or decaf green tea-let one of these steep in the treatment water for at least 1 hour before use-the longer it steeps the more tannins released the dark the water the more the Betta will like it...shake well before use

Make sure the pre-mix treatment water is within a couple of degree in temp between the QT water-so not to cause temp shock problems.

Covering the top of the QT container with plastic veggie wrap will also help by keeping the air above the water warm and humid for the labyrinth organ.

Good luck and keep us posted....

Thanks! I'll try that. What is a good size for a QT container? I feel bad he doesn't have a plant to sit on. :(
