Water in filter too low?

I am trying to lessen the intake of my filter so there is not as much outtake. I have a plastic bottle for the outtake but if I don't put something over the intake it is too strong for my Betta or he'll get stuck to the intake.

My question is: is it harmful to the filter media? About and inch to inch and 1/4th doesn't have water going through it. I want to fix it by taking some layers of panty hose off the intake but that makes the flow to strong for my Betta then he gets tossed.

So would leaving that part dry be okay? The is a cycled tank also.

The Betta also likes to play in the current and there is currently none right now. Would anyone say to take some layers off the intake or just leave it?

I prefer the sponge baffle, I think it slowed the outtake quite a bit more than the bottle on my tanks filter.My fish used to get stuck to the intake so, I took a piece of the sponge cut it in half width way and rubber banded it around the intake.Eventually I took it off and he hasn't gotten stuck to it since.they also sell little mesh bags at most petcos that you can put around the intake,a piece of nylon leggings works well too i have heard.

Yeah I have the nylon on it right now, a few layers actually. I haven't been able to find an aquarium sponge anywhere around where I am. I will look for the mesh bag next I'm at Petco.

That's funny, I am in the same situation. I live in a small town with a small, cruel and shady petstore and was wondering if there was anything home made I could try until I get to a city. I will try the panty hose.

Sorrry, I just reread and noticed you already mentioned the nylon. I need my glasses!

Have you tried lifting the intake tube a little bit?

Yeah I'm not sure if you're suppose to tightly wrap it around or not. I did and have like 3 layers one. Eventually the outtake gets really slow because the intake collects particles and gets clogged. That's my problem right now is that there's a little more than a trickle coming out. Somehow still enough to push him down though...

@Littlebittyfish
It's like one of those plastic ones that only go halfway in the tank.
