How do you recognize fin rot?

I googled fin rot and I can't see the fin rot on most of the images. The tails look just like my bettas' tails. Which made me think, perhaps they have it and I don't know what to look for. What does fin rot look like?

How long have you had your fish?If you just got him sometimes it can be hard to tell, If you had him for a little while you can compare before and after photos and see a little bit of shrinking. When Cleo was going through finrot his fins would look real ragged and the spiked tips would turn dark red almost looked like blood, then they would shrink slowly everyday.Sometimes they will have "pinholes" in the fins.

I've had them both for about 6 months now. I was looking because the red betta has always had a black edge to his fins, and I just got curious. So the fins would actually rot (duh) and slow just erode away? What causes it?

Usually it is poor water conditioners, but I believe stress can bring it on as well. My fish Cleo's fin-rot started after his tank accidentally got knocked on the floor and broke.

I believe temperature fluctuations can bring it on, too. That happened to one of mine.

Finrot is quite recognizable by the white fraying of the fins. The edges should look whitish and shredded as if the flesh bacteria is eating it away. If the fins look neatly cut or blown off, then it's either physical fin damage or osmotic shock.

I just purchased a female with severe fin rot. I couldn't tell in the store but when she got home she flared at a female in another cup and about half her tail is completely missing :(
My boys definately do not have any issues with this. I think his tail is just edged in black...
