Well, bettas are pretty territorial, so they will initially chase. Also, guppies have pretty, brightly colored fins. To a betta, what might this look like?... another betta! So it's not the best to keep a guppy with a male betta. But if you don't have another tank for the guppy, you'll just have to wait it out for a while and see what happens. ;)

Guppies really should not be kept alone, they are shoaling species. What size is the tank that has the guppy?

it was a 2 gallon. i had to put the guppy by itself. its either that or he dies because my betta was seriously about to tear it up. i had no choice.. i regret buying him now he wouldve been better off at the shop but he said it was no problem even after i told him my tank specs

Okay well in the future don't listen to what the pet store people say, they are usually wrong. Is there any way you can return/rehome the guppy or get a bigger tank? He will probably die from inadequate conditions. Guppies need to be in groups of five or more and because they are so active they usually need at least 20 gallons, 10 at the very minimum.

Listening to pet store employees is the #1 no-no in betta keeping ;D Guppies are social little things, and need lots of space. Bettas dont need friends or anything, they are perfectly happy by themselves :D

Not only is it a big no-no in betta keeping, it is also a big no-no in the keeping of all fish and animals. For example, at pet stores they sell guinea pigs and those tiny little cages. Guess what? Guinea pigs require a companion and at least 2-3 square feet each! But at petco they sell you cruel cages where the guinea pig gets like one square foot. Same is with fish, they don't give you the right information.

You should always research before you buy, never rely on pet store employees. Can you get him a bigger tank and some friends at a different pet store?
