I did a bit of research before getting my 10 gallon tank and decided to start cycling it by adding ammonia. I'm trying the method where the ammonia is raised up to about 5ppm and then allowed to fall before adding more. I was wondering if anyone has used this method. How long did it take for the ammonia level to fall and the nitrite level to rise? How long was it before the tank had completely cycled?

My 10 gallon just finished cycling on Sunday (3/20). I began adding ammonia on 2/22. I began seeing nitrites almost immediately, but they hovered around .25 ppm for weeks. Then it spiked probably about three weeks later, I forgot to mark the exact date. About a week after that, my tank was cycled (nitrates had spiked and ammonia and nitrites were at 0).
Waiting for the nitrites to spike is definitely the longest part of the cycle.
Thanks! Everyone around me seems to think I can just throw in the fish and I have to keep telling them that it probably will be a few weeks. I'm glad to know a general estimate of how long the process should take.
