I'm looking to get a bigger aquarium set up. What would you recommend?

I would say just a normal, rectangular 5 gallon aquarium. Also for heaters I recommend aqueon brand, but that is the only brand I have had experience with (except tetra and petco brand, those suck!). Get adjustable as those are much easier and safer to manage.

Is there a particular aquarium kit you can recommend?

Not a kit, no. I got everything separately.

I'm not looking to spend a lot of money... are kits a bad idea?

It really depends on the kit, honestly. I kit could save you money, but sometimes the things included (filter/heater) are not of the best quality and break down easily, requiring you to spend even more.

Get the topfin, that one sounds really good. The heater that is included is adjustable which is awesome. It even includes a thermometer. I say go for this one. If I needed a kit I think this is the one I would buy.

Walmart carries a 5gal with light, standard filter, tank for $29.00, add the 2-5 tetra heater for $15.00 and be good to go.

OR
10 gal tank $15.00
Aqua filter $10.00
Desk lamp $15.00
10-20 gallon heater $15.00
Petco sells Aqueon full kit 10gal for $70.00 and full kit 5gal for $50.00

Too much heater will be too much in smaller tanks, I'm quite happy with my wally 5gal. I cut the bottom U of the return off but most people rubber band a sponge onto that area to slow down the out-flow
you'll also want API Stress Zyme for the new tank. Get is all set up without anything but treated water and the filter then throw in some food and some stress zyme. Wait a while then come back and learn about cycled tanks.
