How to keep tank happy when tank is FINALLY cycled?

Just thinking ahead- am so used to doing tank water changes that, why, I'm wondering what I'll do with my time (without water changes) when the time comes that the tank is cycled! lol

So- when it IS cycled.... what do you do to keep it that way?

Its the nitrogen cycle, essentially bacteria builds up in your filter and substrate that eats ammonia, which grows and then converts to nitrite, then to nitrate- which is less harmful than the other two and allows for much less frequent changes.

Check that out.

I cycled my tank with the help of live plants- mostly anarchis which noms ammonia like a champ.

Your fish are what supply the ammonia after it is cycled. Unless you do a fish in cycle, you need to supply it with ammonia. I recommend not doing fish-in, its harder and takes longer.

Once the tank is cycled is followed by general preventative maintenance which equates to regular water changes.

You'll probably be down to weekly changes. On my 5 and 6 gallons, I do 50% weekly. I do about 40% weekly on my 16 and 10 gallons. That keeps the nitrates down to 5 or 10.
