Sand is easier to clean, because the crud floats on the sand... you just have to position you sphion (sp) wand over the crud and it gets pulled away. If you suck up any sand, it falls back again out of the sphion (sp) to the tank floor.

Awesome tank! Can't believe that blue, blue sand - decorations look great. I'm usually all for the natural look, but this is very cute! :D
