Yesterday evening I found Aka laying on the gravel of his side of the tank. I took him out and let him be in a small dish so he was able to make it to the top for air. But he didn't make it. I am pretty sure it was just natural death. For the past 6 months I noticed he was slowing down a bit.

He was my very first betta. He was with me for 4 years almost. I'll miss him.

first betta for four years? Damn girl, you've got to be a betta natural then!
But I'm thinking your assumption of it being a natural death is a good one. So don't be hard on yourself. It's always hard losing these little critters. They hold something quite special that we can't help but fall in love with.
It's nice to know he had a caring owner and a loving one.

Thanks. I am not to sure how long they live but I was expecting it was old age. They are pretty unique fish. They have a good personality. I did take excellent care of him. He went through about 5 different tanks...each time was an upgrade. He was a spoiled fish.


I was kinda surprised how long he lived too since I never had a betta before, it was all new to me. I have kept freshwater community and aggressive fish before, so it probably helped to have 8years experience.

They usually live 3-5 years with good care, and if you got him in a pet store and had him for four years, he was probably five when he died. A nice old age. :)

Awww, I'm sorry! But what a way to go! Very few Bettas are cared for well enough to die of old age.

Yeah I got him from petsmart. I'm glad that he lived this long and his whole life with me.

Im so sorry. I have a petsmart betta too and she is in very good health! I hope she is as healthy and happy as your little boy was!
