Well, my opinion is always the bigger the better, but the bare minimum I stick to is 2.5 gallons. 1 gallon is, in my opinion, far too small. (This is just my opinion, I'm sure some of you have perfectly happy Bettas in 1 gallon tanks).
A good size for a male Betta is 5 gallons, but if you can't afford/fit a 5 gallon then 2.5 or more gallons is acceptable.
I'm sure there will be those who disagree with me; however I'm not here to start an argument.
I appreciate all feedback. I am going to buy a nice 5 gallon tank soon (maybe 10 gallons if I can fit it). If I get the 10 gallon tank, I may try to start a sorority and leave Lief in the 2.5 gallon tank. If I buy a 5 gallon tank I will let Lief be one happy guy...until I get my desired halfmoon male (if I ever get one). I don't know where any breeders in Indiana are. I tried using google to find one, but to no avail.

Yep. Like "Leaf" :) My sister's boyfriend was saying "Layf" because I said "like Lief Erickson" and he was saying how it was pronounced "layf" Erickson...I wasn't into the politics of the name, because, well, it's my fish so I get to choose the pronunciation and I liked "Leaf" better than "Layf" hahaha
Haha I agree, leaf is better than layf! lol! I love the spelling too. There is an actor named Liev Scheiber, his name is sort of similar, but I still like Lief better!
Yeah, my first Betta I owned was named Lancelot...but he didnt last long because I was very new, and probably overly enthusiastic, about owning my *own* pet. I got a tank from a friend, washed it out with SOAP (woops!!!), put water that was warmer than what he was used to, added a good amount of salt when he wasnt used to salt, along with some other things and he went into shock. I was pretty upset, but if he hadnt died then I would still have a veil tail and not my crown tail. Not that there is anything wrong with veil tails, and certainly not to say I am glad he died :(

Ugh I cringe when I think about the way I cared for my first betta :(. When he got sick I joined this site for help. Unfortunately he passed too but I really got into fish keeping. So if my fish hadn't died I might have never really gotten in to fish, but I am not glad he died either :(

Yeah. My girlfriend (who was not my girlfriend at the time, but was soon afterwards) has a Betta named Escargot and she didn't have a plant for him to rest on. Since mine had just passed, I told her she could give Escargot Lancelot's fake plant, saying "Lancelot would have wanted it this way...he was always the giver, never expecting gifts in return" along with other stuff like that hahaha
