You don't need an extra tank. Just float him in a food-safe container inside of the five gallon. That way he still gets the heat.

Honestly I have no idea. I'm very confused by the whole thing. The post above from iheartbettas says that bettas can't process aquarium salt, which means I shouldn't have put the salt in, but...I don't know? I don't know. Seems like it's pretty much a guessing game to figure out what works, I realize since my fish can't talk to me and tell me what's wrong I just have to use trial and error.

What they mean is that their bodies can't process the salt, so the salt is always in the water, which means that you can only re-add the salt once you have done the water change. For example, if on day one you did a water change and added salt you wouldn't add salt on day two unless you do another water change. The salt doesn't evaporate or anything or get removed by the filter, so the water changes are necessary.

Last night I was out of water conditioner so I ran out to our pet store and the girl there recommended the betta water conditioner as opposed to AquaSafe. I did a water change, probably about 40%, and used the betta conditioner and salt. Today when I got home he was frisking around almost normally! I don't know if I want to say we're out of the woods, but I was pretty happy to see he looked perky!
The bad thing is, I used just about that entire bottle of betta conditioner because my tank is so big (10 gal). Don't know that I can use that every time, but I guess as long as I keep up with the water changes it should be OK to go back to the less expensive stuff, right?

Yeah, I'd think it would be fine. If you can find Prime, it's usually a cheaper option. It's only two drops per gallon. I'm glad to hear he's feeling better. :)

RIP Helios as a followup to this thread. He never did fully recover from whatever was ailing him and it appears this morning that he is gone :(
He was an awesome fish.
Can anyone point me in a direction of how to get the tank ready for a new fish? I don't know if there was something wrong with it or not, so I guess I'd probably start over huh :(
