Someone help me find a heater

I have my fish in his un-heated 5 gallon (for the moment). I plan on heating it.
I had to move him into the 5 gallon in kind of a hurry though, because the other tank I had him in temporarily was leeching some sort of toxin in the water...

My tank without the heater stays at about 74-75. Our house temperature stays at a steady 77 degrees. What type of heater will raise my tank temperature without cooking my fish? I had a tetra heater but it sometimes cooked my water in the 5 gallon up to 83. I don't really want my tank to be that hot. I want it to be around 78-79.
Can anyone recommend a heater that might work for my 5 gallon?
Does anyone know if the Petco brand heaters are any good?

Petco sucks. Their heaters break down easily. I suggest an aqueon adjustable heater.

They sell them at most petcos.
