I tried a doily tied with a ribbon over a heated 1 gallon drum before deciding it was too small and difficult to keep up with the water changes to keep the amonia down.

I've decided to buy a bowl and try out the saran wrap trick. I don't see how the saran wrap won't do it's job now that I have some confidence about it. However, bettas are tropical fish and need a lot of heat due to that fact, so how can I heat a fish bowl? Are there special heaters that they make for them? If so where can I buy one? I apologize for all of the questions, but being a newbie isn't all that simple.

You can get a 25 watt heater for a 2 gallon bowl. It's the perfect size.

Of course they do! But be warned: heating a smaller (under 2.5 gallon) bowl without a proper lid is somewhat difficult. The bigger the tank is, the easier it is to heat.

I personally really like my marineland 10w heater. They sell them at petsmarts and cos as well as many other places. It works well and is reliable like most things marineland sells. If youre getting a heater, you need* a thermometer, too. They sell them everywhere, walmarts, even. Get one that has a suction cup.

Pay attention to wattage: I wouldnt go above 10w if you can avoid it.

Btw.....Tetra makes heaters, they sell them at walmarts....they suck! Haha. But thats my experience, though others often agree. Just a warnin' ;P
