:hmm: I recently upgraded Harley from a 1 gallon bowl (got Harley and the bowl on 03-16-2011) to a 10 gallon tank (on 03-25-2011) with a filter, heater, etc. He currently has fin rot (since I got him) but we're working on that.
In the bowl, everyday after a water change (every 2 days) he would build a bubble nest. Since he's been in the new tank, he hasn't made one. It's 8 days now and he seems to be adjusted to his new tank and swims around a lot now and is eating well. I'm just wondering if it's a big deal that he hasn't made a bubble nest yet as he was doing it relatively frequently before? Is he still maybe not comfortable or is he just not in the "mood"?
I had the same thing happen. My betta would always make bubble nests in the 1 gallon, but has not made any since the move to the 10 gallon. Perhaps it's the water flow that prevents him from making one. *shrug* He still looks and acts happy, though, without the bubble nest making.
The water flow shouldnt prevent him from making one, unless he just doesnt like it. In my 10 gallon, my females have made a humongous bubble nest and they built it right next to the filter...and even ON the filter! It was quite the sight. Im still wondering if it was the efforts of one female, a few females, or all females! :O
The mechanical act of making bubbles that stay is something both can do, every once in a while a girl will figure it out and do it for fun.
Its like wearing your guy's boots, hat and shirt to greet him. (said before)
The likely issue in the new tank is that he doesn't have any safe place to anchor the bubbles and the water quality may be... too good!
If you take about nine inches of air-line tubing and wet the tips you can stick one end inside the other and make a hoop that will float on the surface.
As long as he doesn't use it to play Super Fish it'll likely be a place he hangs out.

My buddy Cleo rarely makes bubble nests in his 10 gallon. He will if I leave some plants floating up near the top of the waterline though! He likes to secure his little bubble nests around some live floating plants. Soo cute to watch.Your fish may just be getting used to his new surroundings though. It took Cleo a month before he made a bubble nest in the 10 gallon.
FWIW, I have some guys that make nests a LOT, some that did, but stopped after a time (figured out no good lookin' honey was going to swim by, I guess) and some that have NEVER made a nest.
I think if the fish looks good, eats well & is active, you don't have anything to worry about.
