Floating snail?

My snail is floating, and I read on applesnails.net that it's because he has too much air in his lung. I know he's alive because he's tried to come out of his shell a few times. Has this ever happened to anyone else, and, if so, how long did it take for him to sink?

I found my snail like that this morning actually, and I freaked out. He is crawling all over the tank now, enjoying his little snail life. I wasn't there when he sank because of class, but I imagine that he was there for part of the night. I tempted him and his little wifey to sink by dropping in an algae wafer.

He already died. I got two new snails, and they've been hiding out in their shells since I got them two days ago. The peek out now and then, and I have food available for them. I hope they survive. I've learned not to disturb them. I don't want to stress them out. They have their own section of a tank so they don't get harassed by a Betta.
