Age of fish without knowing?

I see some here say the petstore fish are already a year old or so. How can you tell how old a fish is? Is it the size or is there another way to know?

with long-tails, i'm guessing it's the length of the tail. alot of the longer tailed fish don't get the big, beautiful tails you see in pet stores, until they're around a year old or so. that's just my guess. :3

I started a similar thread awhile back.

Here is the link;

There wasn't anything really concrete, but there are several helpful tips from many members. Hope this helps!
