Exclamation New 5 Gallon Tank for Rocky

Hi!

This is a question I need to get answered and have had no luck out on the net. So, a little about Rocky (my fish) I got him in September 2010 and he has been living in a small maybe 1/2 gallon bowl. Regular water changes and he is doing well. I recently bought him a 5 gallon lovely aquarium with plastic decorations and all! So happy to get to spoil him.

But, alas, I think I made a mistake the first day. I put him in the tank maybe 2 hours after I had set everything up. I know it was too early but I figured I had changed his water so many times and he was fine what was different with this? (Stupid I know) He was ok at first but then started to like take really big GULPS underwater. Like he was gasping. This did not look good. he then started to jerk around a little. I did not like the look of that and put him back into his original bowl. He is ok there and is still a little stressed I think from the ordeal but no gasping or jerking.

I have now waited 24hrs since setting up water in new aquarium and bought a "master test kit" to test everything. PH, Ammonia, Nitrates and Nitrites. Everything was normal. I am now apprehensive about putting my baby boy into this tank that caused him so much stress!

Please help as I do not want to lose him. I don't really know what cycling a tank is and still really don't get it. How do I cycle if I need to? (I have read the posts but it makes no sense really)

Any help or input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again!

Carl

Did you put water conditoner in the 5g tank water before putting him in? Was the temperature similar to that of his bowl? The ideal temperature for bettas is between 77-82F.

the temperature was it the same as his old water?
Did you use water conditioner to remove the chlorine?
You didn't use any soap or anything to clean the new tank did you-soap is toxic to fish.

If the water in his bowl was filthy (filthy being, in a half gallon he didnt get 100% water changes daily or at least every other day) then he could be adjusting to the clean water maybe? I cant think of much else that could be wrong... hmm...

His water was always very clean. I read 2 opinions on the gulping. One that he was flushing his gills. Two that he was starved of oxygen! Not sure what to believe.

Maybe it was because I didn't "age" the water? (let it stand for 24hrs?)

Ah, bettas get their oxygen from breathing at the surface through their "labryinth organ", so that rules that out..

I think I'll try him again in a couple of days after his stress levels are down. Will let you know!

It couldn't be cos it's too big of a tank?? lol
