HELP with new tank?

I'm preparing for an upgrade from >1 gallon to 5 gallons.

I can't afford all of the equipment at once, so I hope to slowly build up the tank. Right now, I've got one small, plastic plant (but I'd probably give that to the other Betta), and a net, and water conditioner.
Which of the following are the MOST important things (in other words, what order should I buy them in?)?:
  • Aquarium GRAVEL
  • Java Fern
  • Moneywort
  • Driftwood
  • Ruins / Some other decoration
  • Thermometer
  • Submersible Heater
  • Gravel Vacuum
  • Ghost Shrimp
  • Anything else....

Thermometer and heater should be the first things if you can't get anything else...then hiding place, gravel...plants, shrimp and vacuum.....

In a pinch you can use a coffee mug for the hiding place....a rinse in vinegar and fresh running water will rid it of any soap residue...

You also need a light by the way. The gravel should come first, then the light and heater (because plants couldn't live without either) the thermometer, plants, other decorations, shrimp, and vacuum in that order.

Hello!

I'd say that the heater and thermometer would be first priority. Then maybe the gravel, plants, gravel vacuum.

I would also recommend some sort of test kit (like one of the 5 in 1s - although many people here recommend the liquid kits, but those are more expensive). I like mine just so I am sure that my water has all the right parameters. :)

I'll also vote for the heater and thermometer. With a tank that size, you need to keep it warm. Using a light probably wont do much to heat the tank. And definitely get the water test kit. I'm pro-liquid testing but something is better than nothing. The conditioner is a must too. As said by OFL you can use a coffee mug for a hiding spot but preferably with no logo or writing on it. That way you reduce the chance of harmful chemicals/paint coming off in the tank. The gravel isn't a must (and either is the vacuum) but the vacuum makes water changes easier. Real plants are nice too but not a must. Good luck!

Sorry but I disagree, heater and thermometer should always come before gravel. Gravel is unnecessary whereas a heater is vital.

The heater is basically the life support system for your Betta. Therefore, it is what you should buy first.
