100w heater

My hubby came home with a 100w heater from the Value Village today, but the box doesn't say how many gallons the heater's good for. So how small of an aquarium do I get to tell my husband he has to buy me now?

I use 100w in 10 gal but we also keep our house really cold. It could probably be used in a 20 or 30 gallon.

You live in Newfoundland...As in...gets very cold and stays that way most of the year? I have a 100 Watt for my 10 gallon (used 2 months out of the year) But, those are the absolute coldest months where I live.

Like around 10-20 gallons should be fine.

Usual rule of thumb is 3 - 5 watts per gal.

Of course, you can (and I have/do) go bigger! :)

I could never understand why everyone assumes Newfoundland is really cold. lol It actually gets really warm here in the summer (25+ degrees celsius) and our winters are milder than Toronto's.

So anything from a 10-30g would be okay, but 20-30g would probably be best for the heater?

Since you are looking at purchasing a tank probably the best thing to do is ask someone where you live what size they would recommend. Just tell them that you have a 100 Watt heater and need to know the maximum size tank for your area.....Well, I am off....to drive my horse and buggy to town....being from Kansas...

I live in Edmonton, AB and we get pretty cold too. This winter we had a few days that were -40C/F with the wind chill. That's more than cold enough for me! From what I've seen 100W are good for about 30 gallons or so.
