Unhappy Is my beta fish dying do you think?

Please help me if you can. I am a new owner and am afraid my fish is dying.

Housing
What size is your tank? 5 gallon bowl
What temperature is your tank? 75 F but tonight I got a new heater that will push it to 83F. It seems to be making some type of a sound that the other heater didn't make...
Does your tank have a filter? No
Does your tank have an air stone or other type of aeration? No
Is your tank heated? Yes
What tank mates does your betta fish live with? Nothing. but there was a live plant in his bowl that just turned brown. THe Petco guy tonight told me to take it out, so I did.

Food
What type of food do you feed your betta fish? 2 pellets of beta gold/day
How often do you feed your betta fish? Daily

Maintenance
How often do you perform a water change? Have not changed it yet; told to do it every 2 weeks.
What percentage of the water do you change when you perform a water change? Told to change 1/2 of the water in the bowl; every 2 weeks; have only had him 10 days so no changes yet.
What type of additives do you add to the water when you perform a water change? Stress Zyme +

Water Parameters:
Have you tested your water? If so, what are the following parameters?
N.A
Ammonia:
Nitrite:
Nitrate:
pH:
Hardness:
Alkalinity:

Symptoms and Treatment
How has your betta fish's appearance changed? He looks sad

How has your betta fish's behavior changed? He is not moving at all in the bowl. He is laying on the bottom of the bowl, on his side. When I went to scoop him out to take him to the fish guy at Petco, he did dart away from me. He swam around in the tank at Petco. When I brought him back home he went right to the bottom of the bowl and is not moving.

When did you start noticing the symptoms? this morning.

Have you started treating your fish? If so, how? I just bought Lifeguard pills for him tonight and put 1 in the water.

Does your fish have any history of being ill? Not that I know of.

How old is your fish (approximately)? I just bought him 10 days ago :(

In a 5g unfiltered you should be doing at least a 50% a week. The best temps for a betta are between 78 and 82F, 83F is a little on the high side ;) He could be just lethargic from the water conditions and the cold temp.

Thanks for your response. I asked the Petco guy whether I should change the water right now, he said no, to just see if the warmer temp and medicine helps him. But from what you are saying, sounds like I should change the water, yes?

Definietly. Take the advice of a Petco employee with a grain of sand. They just want to sell something and the advice they give is rarly correct.

I agree with Arashi, pet store employees are not always to be trusted. ;)

In addition to the water conditions, does your betta have a hiding spot in his bowl. That's important. You mention you've removed the plant. Does he have anything. Even a coffee mug or a pot on its side will provide your fish with a private spot to hide. :)

this part says to add stress coat first to remove chlorine, petsmart and petco's directions both say it too
