Unhappy Mold?

*sigh* So I've set up a new tank which has been cycling for a week now. On the heater there is some white fluffy white stuff growing. Its also showing up on a log ornament in patches. I suspect its either mold or algaebut I'm not entirely sure. When I feed my fish I give him three pellets and watch him eat it just to be on the safe side. I've done small water changes as well. But now there is an odor coming from the tank. Should I be doing 20% water changes instead of 10%? And should i be doing it every two days instead of every three?

I forgot to mention that the tank is a 5 gallon with a heater and filter.

I know what you are talking about. I get it on my goldfish tank. Little fliffy white spots that stick to the glass right? I have no clue how to get rid of them. I just take a sponge and wipe them off. Sometimes my pleco will eat at it as well, but he does not to a good job. Apple snails are a big help. Maybe get one of those?

As for water changes, you really should do %50 water changes twice a week for a 5gal.

I have it on a couple of my bettas heater. I have no idea what it is but it doesn't bother them. I just clean it of every now and then.
