Finrot or tail biting?

I went to bed last night and his fins looked good and when I woke up they are all shredded. He had torn a big chunk out of his tail 3 days ago and it had almost completely healed by last night. So imagine my surprise when I woke up to this....

from those pictures I'd say he started tail biting. My boy did the exact same thing, the feathering is what gave it away.
Now I can't say if he's got fin rot, perhaps someone else can chime in on that. An aq salt treatment is advised, to prevent fin rot, and OFL suggested live foods to help him recover nicely.

I got home friday after an exam to my boy having done the same thing to his tail. This can be so frustrating.

I got some aq salt and a QT tank today. Hopefully he won't keep ripping his tail up.
