Is Hestia a...Hester?

After looking at pictures of another member on here's supposedly "female" betta that turned out to be a male, I've been wondering about Hestia.

There are signs that she's a female. She looks slightly plump, like she has *some* eggs, but not much. She's not mad colorful, when I bought her, she was in a sorority. When she flares, she flares head on.

But after looking at the betta who belongs to that user (I'm sorry! I forgot who!), I've been wondering if she's actually a Hester. She does flare head on, but she also swims and shows off her side. Her beard seems big for a female. Granted, I've never really seen a female betta flare. I'm going off on this picture to help me on this bit.

She does look plump with "eggs" but I would think she would drop eggs occasionally. I haven't seen any eggs at all. She also seems bigger than other female bettas I've seen. I've heard that female plakats are larger than other types, but I don't know that for sure.

Help me out! Here's a few shots of her flaring. They're not the greatest - phone pictures and all, and I was also holding up a mirror.

I'll feel really stupid if I find out I've owned her for over two months and she's actually a he.

That's a male. I looked at the picture before I even read what you wrote, and if I had no clue you thought it was a female, I'd say it was a male instinctively. I'm pretty sure you have a boy on your hands! Congrats, he's beautiful!

She is most definately a he, a very pretty he might I add ^-^ His ventrals are much longer than a females, and if he flares sideways, then he is definately male.

Guess Al's also mistook "her" for a girl. Sigh.

The boyfriend just suggested "Nero" as a name for "Hestia."

Darn. I really was hoping "she" was a girl.

And thanks, everyone! He's quite a character! Love him loads. Even though he's been living with a female name for months now. Oops?

Every time I'm checking out the bettas at Petco, I'm always looking for a mislabeled plakat male/female. No luck yet. Nice fish!

Thanks, everyone! He/she still is a ton of fun, even though I'm still baffled on his/her gender. I walked in my room about 10 minutes ago, said, "Hi Octo octo! Hi Hes Hes!" And then I realized that it was a girly name for a not-so-girly fish.

My sister suggested Tybalt. I really like that name. Maybe Macbeth...? Or Lysander... Or Demetrius... Or Othello... Stop me before I get carried away!

I've got a question, though. There are some spots on its dorsal fin, and I'm trying to figure out if that's a sign that it has some dalmatian genes, or if it's just what plakats have. Help?
