Wartooth stressed? Also is this safe?

Okay. So I came home tonight and Wartooth was beyond stressed and I have no idea why. His color faded and his gills were moving rapidly so I changed his water (due to the fact that he has a white spot that will not go away so I have to do regular water changes). His water is at a constant 76 degrees and he hasn't been messed with all day. He's in his emergency tank and has been there since Saturday so that shouldn't be the issue.

Anyways, I covered his tank up with a black shirt of mine, will that smother him? I know that sounds stupid but I'd rather be safe than sorry!

What size is your tank?
What temperature is your tank?
Does your tank have a filter?
Does your tank have an air stone or other type of aeration?
Is your tank heated?
What tank mates does your betta fish live with?

Food
What type of food do you feed your betta fish?
How often do you feed your betta fish?

Maintenance
How often do you perform a water change?
What percentage of the water do you change when you perform a water change?
What type of additives do you add to the water when you perform a water change?

Water Parameters:
Have you tested your water? If so, what are the following parameters?

Ammonia:
Nitrite:
Nitrate:
pH:
Hardness:
Alkalinity:

Symptoms and Treatment
How has your betta fish's appearance changed?
How has your betta fish's behavior changed?
When did you start noticing the symptoms?
Have you started treating your fish? If so, how?
Does your fish have any history of being ill?
How old is your fish (approximately)?

Try just covering the bowl with the dark shirt but leave a small area open (on the edge) so that air can get in and out.

It's all good now. He's just fine this morning. The lights were off last night while I was sleeping and he's all feisty this morning and wanting his momma to feed him. haha
