I came home from work about 30 minutes ago, and went directly to feed the fish. I noticed in Steve's tank that all I could see were his red fins being swallowed by the java moss that covers a little hut I bought him (and he loved) from petco. I thought maybe that he had died and fallen on to that, but no, when I went in with the net to poke a little, I realized what had happened. He had outgrown the hole in the top of the hut and was now stuck. I have no idea how long he had been in the hole, but I could see a cut in his back and it was pretty deep. I didn't know what else to do, so I had my boyfriend just break the hut. Once he was finally free I could see that there was no recovering from the damage that had been done. He was cut so badly all around his body that I could see some insides. He couldn't swim, he couldn't move at all, and there was no way he was going to be able to get to the surface from any depth of water to breathe. I knew that I had to do what was right and put him out of his suffering.
I love you and will miss you Steve. I will never forget the day I met you and how special you were as one of my first bettas.
RIP.
