Emergency!!

Housing
What size is your tank? 5
What temperature is your tank? 72
Does your tank have a filter? Yes
Does your tank have an air stone or other type of aeration? I don't think so
Is your tank heated? Yes
What tank mates does your betta fish live with? N/A

Food
What type of food do you feed your betta fish? Pellets and bloodworm treats
How often do you feed your betta fish? 3 pellets twice a day

Maintenance
How often do you perform a water change? 1/4 twice a week
What percentage of the water do you change when you perform a water change? 25
What type of additives do you add to the water when you perform a water change?BettaSafe by Tetra

Water Parameters:
Have you tested your water? If so, what are the following parameters?
I just took a sample to PetSmart and they said it was fine.
Ammonia:
Nitrite:not sure
Nitrate:not sure
pH:not sure
Hardness:not sure
Alkalinity: not sure

Symptoms and Treatment
How has your betta fish's appearance changed? He seems to have lost some color under his face... I guess his neck area? Underneath between gills and mouth.
How has your betta fish's behavior changed? He's absolutely exhausted and I'm afraid he's going to die any moment. He won't come up except for air, and when he does, he's so exhausted from swimming to the top that he just lets himself freefall to the bottom. ): UGH!! I'm sitting here bawling my eyes out. I want to take HIM to PetSmart but I'm afraid of stressing him in the car.
When did you start noticing the symptoms? About 3 days ago, I noticed him staying at the bottom and not being active. With the heater being on, some days his water temp has still gotten below 75 (72 at the lowest) due to someone else living here cracking the central air conditioning when I'm not home.
Have you started treating your fish? If so, how? I did a 50% water change and out of fear, took all the gravel out and did a deep cleaning instead of just the vacuum.
Does your fish have any history of being ill? When I got him about a year ago, he was ill then with popeye - and had been living in a tiny bowl. I treated him with Maracyn, and bought him a decent home etc and it cleared up and he hadn't been sick since until now.
How old is your fish (approximately)? I'm not sure how old he was when I got him... but I think he's about 1.5 years old.

I've posted here several months ago and you all helped me to save Deuces once... since I kind of rescued him from where I work, without having any idea of how to take care of him -- I greatly appreciate it. It's been almost a year (or maybe more, I'm not sure) and he is sick again .... and this time I'm not sure what it is.

I put Maracyn in his tank the past few days, in case he had something wrong with his gills, since I see discoloration below that area.... however, he's just getting worse, to the point that I'm afraid he won't make it. I see NO physical signs of any diseases. His water tested fine at PetSmart. Please please send me in a direction.

Okay, first of all...
we want to make it easy for your betta to get air.

put him in a container you can float in his tank, with just enough tank water in the container to cover him...

It is possible your betta suffered thermal shock. :(

Stabilze the heat (around 76F); that will make him more comfortable.

You've made him as comfortable as possible and made it easy for him to get air. That may be all we can do at this point.

I wouldn't add food or any other chemicals at this point. Fresh, conditioned and heated water will be the best thing for him.

Bettas can get really ill, really fast. :(

Your little buddy may perk up and recover; but the symptoms you are describing are not good.

I hope your little buddy can pull through... good luck to you both!

Thank you all... I called and the pet store will be closed before I can make it driving there, so I can't go see about getting a better heater until tomorrow. I just Deuces can make it through the night... ugh...
