Laying on top of the filter, OUT of the water????

Hi! New to this forum and to betta keeping. Had my fella a month and a few habbits are starting to worry me.
First off, it's 27c in my tank, filtered, 35g and is sharing with 2 baby angels one Pleco and 3 dull female guppies.
When I saw him in the shop I caught glimpse of him squeezing through the smallest hole in a decoration and just laying there for a bit. Since I've got him home I've had 4 'death' scares... He sits about 2cm out of the water on top of the filter and just doesn't move. He will always jump back in when a net goes anywhere near him!
My friends keep joking that hes going to grow legs and run away at night but it's very worrying! Anyone had the same experience? Thanks!

That makes me think there is something in the water he wants to get away from. How often do you change the water in your tank? And what additives do you put in the water?

I do 20% twice a week and all I use is tapsafe as addatives, could he think my female guppies are bettas and be scared of them? I did a long google search on bettas doing this and only found 1 other post from 2002 which didn't help!

What kind of pleco do you have? Some on them can get pretty big. The Angels might be giving him some problems too.

Have you tested the tank for ammonia/nitrites/nitrates after one of these "escapes"?

The ammonia, nitrate and nitrites are all at 0, pleco is a 1 inch bristlenose and my angels are tiny, no bigger than a centimetre. Nothing scary in my tank, is planted. Im thinking of changing my filter to something without a current, will that help you think?

Have you tried lowering the water height in the tank some?

Ahhh, he started doing the filter thing every couple of minutes, after a close inspection turns out I have White spot! Every fish has it so going to treat then then see if he stops.
