Angry filter

I'm in the process of setting up a ten gallon tank and am adding a filter, which I've never used on a tank before. It's one of these guys:

An Aqua-tech 5-15

So, I pieced it together, attached it to the side of the tank, plugged it in, and now it's making angry, choppy noises and no water is going through it.

I feel like I'm missing something obvious, but does anyone know what's up? I want to get this tank cycling!!

Thanks :)

Fill up the inside of the filter with water before you plug it in :)

No problem! I did the exact same thing with my first filter!

It takes like a gallon of water to prime my aquatech 5-10. When I turn it off to do water change I make sure to leave out the 1 gallon..then I plug it in and then use the gallon jug to get it going again...kinda odd...My other aqueon filter just starts right up ..no gargling grinding sounds about it..

That's so odd Littlebittyfish. With my tetra 10 gallon filter I just put a cup of water in it after water change and it starts right up when I plug it back in.

Just filled it and now it's purring away. Going to need a baffle though, for sure.

Thanks guys!

I think starting the filters back up is the worst part of water changes. Drives me crazy! :). Glad you got it all worked out!

And THAT is the main reason I have switched to internal filters!!!

Besides that - they are pretty darn quiet!!!!
