Yes Algae wafers will be wonderful. just don't use a whole or a half of one. Bettas love them too believe it or not and since snails don't eat a TON in a short amount of time your betta sill likely try to steal it and get bloated.
I'd feed them about an 1/3 of an algae wafer a day or twice a day.
As for my choice I chose Nerite! =] If you live near a Petco they usually have the tracked ones which are gorgeous! <3
They look exactly the same as Mystery snails too except they don't get as big, they're black, and they have orange shells with tracks! They also don't reproduce unless there are two in the same tank and they're of opposite gender. =]
They hold onto the glass really well though so if you want to do a partial change and they're above the water line that you want to change to or if you need to do a 100% change you should wait and watch for when they get down on the substrate and then pick them up. =] this will keep them from getting hurt. =]
Also if you ever decide to switch to live plants in the future, nerite snails will eat algae and they will NOT eat plants. Some types of mystery snail will eat plants that are either dying or a bit sickly. So if you're trying to nurse a plant back to top condition you may come home to a missing plant. :/
