Inches of fish per gallon

So I've heard about this rule where for every certian inches of fish you need to have a certian amount of gallons. I forgot it :P
I found a 10 gallon in my crawl space that my dad had from like 40 years ago. I was gonna do chichlids, cause I have 2 betta tanks and a 37 comunity with Dwarf Gourami, sword tail and a pleco. But its too small. So i think i might do another community if i can find cool fish. if not i'll divide and get 2 more bettas.

anyway, anyone know what that rule is?

Well the rule is 1 inch per gallon but it really depends on the fish. For example, a goldfish that grows to about 6" needs at least 20 gallons so the rule in ineffective. And an Oscar grows to from 12-14" but they need 100 gallons at least per fish. So it totally depends...

Plus the amount of filtration you use is a factor as well.

Edit: There are small cichlids you could do like shellies or dwarf cichlids
