Heater

I'm new to this and am not sure when or if the heater is working. The thermometer stays the same temp. How long does it take for the heater to work?

The red glow dot switches on and off every so often.

Thanks

I can't remember what it is but it stays at 71 F (too cold) the heater looks like this:

(minus the green glow dot)

In my experience, those tetra heaters are total crap! I would highly recommend returning it and getting an adjustable heater. I usually go with the Hagen Elite Mini Submersible 25W but that can only be ordered from somewhere like Amazon.

I have two of those exact heaters, one each in 2.5g tanks and luckily have not had any problems with them. They keep my tanks between 76 and 80 degrees (depending on ambient temp, and I live in a cold NYC apartment).

However, I think you should return yours, though. It seems like it's malfunctioning. The lights on mine are either red or green, it's never not lit. And my temperature is almost always at 78, sometimes a little higher or lower like I mentioned earlier.

Sounds like you got a bad one. The adjustable are definitely better. You can adjust your temp if your fish gets sick as needed.

Some of those tetra heaters work great, some don't...luck of the draw. I always recommend an adjustable heater. What size is your tank? For tanks up to 5g, I recommend the Hagen Elite that iheartmybettas suggested.
