Sex please

Do pearl gouramis do better in couples? Cos then i'd get a mate for my Pearl, but i don't know what sex he/she is. Can somebody tell from the picture i attached? Thanks

That is a female. A male has that orange on the chest all the way up towards the bottom of the jaw and just below it's eye. As they get older it's easier to sex like nearly all species, but just remember that the male has more color.

Ditto. The dorsal fin's tip is also rounded instead of pointed.

I would have thought it was a male. I've got a pair of Pearl Gouramis and the female has more of a subdued stripe down the body and it's more brownish and she has no real red on her chest including down her fin.

Thanks for the replies. This is a female. With young pearls u can only tell from the dorsal fin, and even then u have to look really well. The young male's dorsal fin is slightly more pointed...and that's really the only difference u can make out when they are 2 inches long. Got my pearl a male and female companion and they're all doing fine
