converted my mom. ^_^

so, my mom recently came to visit me from out of state, and she loved my little guy.

now she wants one of her own!

i think she wants to start with a 5 gallon filtered tank, which neither of us know anything about, but i told her i would help her, and that she should join the forum for even more help!

she's going to pick one up next week.

after she gets that going, and it's all cycled, she going to pick out a betta.

i'm really excited! i wish i lived near her so that i could help in person. ^_^

she's great with animals, and i totally trust her to take care of a betta properly. :)

There are great 5 gallon sets at WalMart for about $30.

Does she have a green thumb? It is possible to "silently cycle" the tank using live plants. They take care of most of the load. ^^ then she could get a fish much sooner!

Whatever you do, don't show her AB!

oh? silent cycling you say?? i will have to look into that! i want to get a 5 gallon to, but i am so intimidated by the cycling process (sounds too much like math to me), but plants i can do!

yes, she has a pretty green thumb.

i'll do more research into that, i think she would like that idea. :)

oh, and i don't think i'd have to worry about her with AB, knowing her she'd be more tempted by the scrawniest looking veiltale she can find at petsmart. ;)

Bahahaha!

Yes, and cycling is nothing big. Basically add ammonia source daily, check the water every few days (petsmart does for free) and wait for ammonia and nitrites to be gone! Ta-da!

Have the tank fully decorated as you do this and don't change the filter cartridge right after. Then, siphon the gravel really well, do a hefty water change, and add your fish! :)

Fish in is a silent cycle, just with plants, so it is much healthier and less stressful to the fish. The plants take most of the ammonia and mirrored out of the water. Mosses, like java moss, LOVE nitrites, and anacharis sucks up ammonia like no other.

Just research a bunch and find out what plants will work for your tanks! A bunch of us are pretty plant savvy (such as myself) and can help you out! Feel free to ask :)

Just tell her to get some Stability from Seachem. That alone had my tank ready in a week - cycled and all.

I Can send you my email I give to people about fish-in cycling, and can modify about plants to help you. I did the silent, more or less.
