Great looking moss ball! :D

I don't mean to scare you but make sure you QT for a very long time. I QT'd mine for about two weeks but it still introduced planaria and detritus worms to my betta tank. Totally harmless but still kinda yucky.

At least it holds still when you're trying to photograph it!

oh cute! i think i will go get one from petsmart tomorrow. i have always wanted one, but petsmart's tanks always look nasty, so i didn't want to transfer anything to my guy. but i never thought about quarantining! good idea. =) what do you do with in quarantine? like, how would i know mine isn't carrying anything nasty on it? do you put salt in the water?

My way of QT is to just change to water to fresh water every day. I don't know if there's anything else I should do. I probably would have just rinsed it and thrown it in the tank, but a few months ago I bought a live plant each for two of my tanks and just tossed them in and within a week both fish were dead. I'm guessing it was the plants, since nothing else changed in the tanks that week.

My Petsmart had these balls in two of their tanks. I was originally going to buy a smaller ball that was in a different tank than this one, but I spotted a dead fish in that tank, and then my sister spotted three more dead fish in the back of the tank. Blech! So I got this one from a tank that didn't have any dead fish (that I could see).

I know someone on the forum bought some marimo balls for a good price from ebay. He says that the balls came in the mail and they were fine. I might do the same to get some for my other tanks.

Great timing on this post. I had the evil marimo balls I got in quarantine since april 20th or so. I still have them in quarantine but I moved them to a filtered 2.5 gallon last night. (with no gravel and no fish) I also have a blob of some kind of fragile stringy moss in there with them that the manager at petco gave to me for free because he said it was clogging their filtration system up really bad. The moss came from one of the sunken head decorations they had there a while back, but had broken off and was floating freely around in the tank.

Is there any way to get rid of those red hair-like worms and the white worms without killing the balls or the moss? I think they live inside the marimo cavity and they come out in mass quantities at night/early morning. The white ones swim around in the water and crawl on the glass.
The red worms I have only seen on surfaces so far. I don't know if the red ones are dangerous but they look like blood worms-but thinner. I have been taking the plants out and rinsing them off under running water but I can't seem to get rid of the bug life. :/
