Question on flaring?

I heard that the occasional flaring is beneficial for bettas so I put my two bettas within view of eachother (In their own tanks, of course) for a couple minutes and my crowntail immediately started swimming back and forth within view of the other betta, flaring like crazy.
The other betta, however, flared once or twice and otherwise ignored the crowntail! Are some bettas more calm than others? He didn't seem interested in flaring AT ALL!

Yeah, some bettas are calmer than others. I've heard that bettas from petshops tend to be more docile than those that come directly from a breeder. Your crowntail may be calmer or he may be older and realize he can't get to the other guy anyway so what's the point of acting up. :) Try using a mirror just on your crowntail and see if he reacts to himself.

The crowntail is the one that flares.. He also killed the cherry shrimp I had in his tank...
My other one, a veil, is the docile one. I think he may have accidentally killed one of the cherry shrimp, but he ignores the crowntail as well as ignoring the other shrimp in his tank (other than the occasional game of chase...poor shrimp!)
Makes me wonder if he'd do well in a community tank once I get one set up!
I KNOW my crowntail wouldn't like any other tankmates. He's vicious!

Oh whoops. Look who didn't read closely enough. Yeah, your crowntail is definitely not community material. Your veiltail, on the other hand, probably could manage in a community tank 'cause there'll be a lot more than just a few cherry shrimp to chase and play with. :) And if not, just be sure to keep his original tank in case you've got to kick him out of the community.
