Accidently bought 3 gallon heater for a 5 gallon tank

Guys,

Should I take the heater back? I decided last minute on a 5 gallon tank and forgot to put back the heater for 3 gallons and find the appropriate one for a 5 gallon tank. It's a Marineland preset to 78 degrees.

Thanks for any help -.-;

It is always good to have exactly what you need. So, I think you should bring it back because, the heater is for a 3g not a 5g.

I actually have a 10g, and use a 10g heater. Than, a while ago I purchased a 20g and used a 10g heater, it takes a while for it to get to the desired water temp. that I want, so I ended up getting a 20g heater, it's just easier that way. (:

I agree with getting an appropriate heater for the tank you're going to have it in. I also think it's better to have a heater with a thermostat (as most do) which you can adjust and set at the temp you want. This way, if you'd need to raise the temp (ie. your fish comes down with ich and is advised to raise the temp a few degrees) then you're able to. Just think, if you need to raise the temp and can't, you'll probably be stressed and wonder what you should do.
