You could get a bristlenose pleco. They typically are full grown at 5 or 6" and it takes a long time to get there.

Maybe try a nerite snail or two. They have pretty shells and won't reproduce in a freshwater tank. They LOVE algae!

Roy? You said your fish went from white to black and red?
Do you have any pictures?
I have a white and that sort of freaked me out.
Mine changes colors with the light and depending upon what is around him. I did notice a greying area close to where the tail begins and around his beard area.
Is it normal for whites/opalines to go through color changes stress or no stress?

when i got him he was solid white, with a little bit of black on the back like someone had ink on hands and touch him and the tip of his mouth was black ...

i never noticed the change until i started seeing the algae and was starting to pay more close attention to the on goings of the tank .. and noticed he was totally diff....

that black has subsided a little but he is still black for the most part and has the almost clear tails

i have to dig out my camera and charge it to get some good pictures

Mystery snails and nerite snails are different. Mystery snails don't really eat algae and they get huge (cause they're really apple snails). Nerite snails will go to town on the algae. :)
