Betta confused?

Once or twice a week I move my Ct's 2.5 gallon next to me Kings 5 Gallon. Normally they flare at each other, but this time the King got huge vertical stripes on the side of his body and frantically kept building his bubble nest(which had been destroyed when i cleaned his water).
Does this mean he thinks its a female? or is he just a bit... confused?

Well, sometimes male bettas start building their nests after seeing another male. Kind of like, "Oh no, there's another guy! I'd better build a nest quick before the other guy builds one and gets all the girls!" So your CT probably felt threatened by your king. But if you want to be sure, you can put your king in a clear-bottom cup and hold it up so you can see underneath. If you see a white dot sticking out between the two front fins, just behind the gill area, then you've got yourself a female king. If you don't see a dot, then it's a male.

the vertical stripes can be a sign of submission. my little black male Erebus would turn brown and get vertical stripes when I would be doing 100% changes on his qt

The vertical stripes are stress stripes. I agree with Sakura8.

Vertical bars are the breeding bars. Horizontal are stress. The pics of bettas breeding in my betta book clearly shows the female with vertical bars. She looks like a well-grilled steak.

So your big ol' king is afraid of a little crowntail? Hehe, what a timid soul.

The nest is most likely a territorial thing.

The stripes? No clue.
