It harms the labyrinth organ. For fin-rot use the recommended dose of AQ salt which for the brand I use was a tsp every five gallons. If he's in a smaller tank use a half teaspoon for a single gallon.

Somebody else will step in here I know, but for fin rot the usually suggested dose is 1 teaspoon per gallon for no more than ten days, doing 100% water changes every day. Most people use some kind of quarantine tank to do this.

If you go to the first thread, there's a sticky that asks for a specific set of information. If you fill that out, people will able to help you more.

I have Akira in a 1.5 at the moment I had to use a half tsp or risk turning his fresh water into salt water.

Can you post a pic.....and we need more information...

What size is the tank, how much and how often are the water changes, water temp, filter, live plants, additives used, tank mates, source water (well, city..etc...) appetite and amount/type of food, how long has he had fin issues, any other sign/symptom...and he is 3 months old or you have had him for 3 months.....
