Lethargic King Betta

I got my king Betta, James, in the beginning of March at the Petco down the street. He was a bit timid the first first days after I brought him home (but I expected that). But in no time he was swimming around having a good ol' time flaring at his reflection and at my finger. It was about 2 days ago that I noticed that he had become sluggish and he had not touched his food. Concerned, I looked at him to see if I could identify any physical changes.
Come to find out, he is constantly flaring. Here are some pictures:

My Water is healthy for him, I did a 100% water change about 5 days ago.
2.5 gallon tank
no filter
no air stones
temperature: 79F
no tankmates

If anyone has any suggestions or questions please ask. I know there isn't much information out about the king Betta.

Welcome to the forum..sorry you are having problems.....it may be a water quality issue....

In a 2.5gal unfiltered tank-twice weekly water changes are needed...1-50% and 1-100% to maintain water quality....

Right now I would start with daily 50% water changes for 2 days and then 1-100% and see if this will perk him up and get him eating again....

Be sure the water is within a couple of degree between new and old water with water changes to prevent temp shock problems and Always use dechlorinator with any new water added to the fish.....

Keep us posted.....

I did a 50% water change and he seems to be eating some.
Something that I didn't think about was the fact that I have recently collected a 10 gallon tank with some Goldfish in it. I'm fishsitting for my friend that is out of town for a few weeks. I moved James's tank across the room and he's swimming around a little more.

I will definitely look into buying a heater for him this weekend.
