Our new betta,Alpha, lives in a great bowl in our bathroom,he seems very happy, but when he eats(betta pellets)he spits out his food, then takes it back in and repeats this many times,is this normal?

Yes. I think that they are just tasting it. Many fish do the same thing. I've been in this hobby a long time and I haven't figured out why they do it.

Welcome to Fishforum.com, Pam.

I've kept bettas and they actually do not like pellets much. Bloodworms, brine shrimps, flakes, peas, mosquito larva are better alternatives but do not feed too much bloodworms. They contain too much protein and can cause bloat. The only reason behind spitting and eating is that they try to soften the pellets to be able to eat them but that's how I figure they are doing like most cichlids do.
