What the heck happened?

He was fine yesterday...

and now he looks like this:

Fin rot? he has clean, warm water and salt. Am I missing something?

What I was worried about was the coloring around the gills and those two front fins. They are gold colored and have been for quite a while.

ALSO: the white squiggly thing is a dog hair on the outside of the tank NOT on the fish.

Looks like finbiting. Is there anything in your tank that could have shredded his fins? It's not uncommon for HM's to bite their fins.

I'm afraid I have to agree, it looks like at least some of his fins were chewed on, poor boy. Clean water and a high protein diet should help to regrow fins. As for the cause of the biting, well that can be more difficult. Try to see if he's stressed, if so then keep it dark. If he's bored, you might need to change things up, move his plants/ decor around. Of course if it's option three and he's biting because his fins are too big/heavy/he's just doing because he's having a bad fin day- well then there isn't much you can do, just try to prevent fin rot.

Tonight he looks like a crown tail

There is a female next to him. Maybe that's stressing him out? I'll put something so he cant see her.

I dont think there is anything in the tank that can shread his tail like that. His plants are silk minus one plastic one, but i dont think that could do any damage.

I'd never seen tail biting until my second halfmoon arrived... I don't know what your boy looks like now (crowntail, hehe) but Japas' tail biting originally looked like this:

I made sure to keep him plenty busy with plants and a cave to explore and it looks like his fins are growing back. *crosses fingers* I don't know how much you've got in your boy's tank but maybe some more stuff to explore and keep him busy busy? Otherwise I'm afraid he's just decided his 'finger nails' are too long and he's biting them. :/

If the female is new, it could definitely be stressing him out. Trying a screen between the two sounds like a good place to start.

I would definitely say tailbiting. It is extremely common in halfmoons. 3 out of 4 of my HMs are tailbiters. It is very irritating! Just make sure he has clean water. I also would not put in salt as a regular additive. It is really only supposed to be used to treat issues like fin rot. You could use it for a few days just to make sure your guy doesn't get fin rot from his tailbiting spree but then quit using it. 10 days is the maximum suggested usage.

Good luck!!

I put a peice of paper between the two tanks and he doesnt look any worse today then he did last night. He has plants and stuff to explore but he was never really interested in them. They only go about 1/2 way to the top of the tank though. Maybe i should get some taller ones. He usually only swims around in the top 1/2 of the tank most of the time.

you might look into some floating plants. There are some fairly easy to handle ones out there.
