Steve is changing colors

My betta has bluish-turquoise fins and body. His head is a darker, drab color. In the past few days it looks like his head is starting to have the same color as his body. Is this normal for a Betta when it starts to thrive in a decent size tank?

How long have you had him? If it hasn't been long, then he could be coloring up as he settles into his new home. Also, young bettas tend to undergo a color change as they mature, too. When I first got my female, she was a dark chocolate-red. Now she's a light red-gold. So it's not uncommon for them to change colors on you.

I think I have had Steve long enough that his tank needs a filter change. Um...three weeks.

Filter, like replacing the filter media? Hehe, I assume you've been changing the water all this time. Three weeks. He should be settled in so his coloration could be because he's comfortable now and in good water.

my Marbles started marbling (unexpectedly haha, living up to his name XD) about a month and a half after I got him and he had already colored up, so marbling is a possibility too!

My Bo did the same thing. Only his body changed color first and then at about three weeks his head go dark. I can still tell when he is upset because his head gets lighter. (When I change his water or move things in his tank etc....)

Bo First day (Bad Pic)

Bo Week 1

Bo last month. (5 months with me.)

It is amazing how much they change over time.

Wow. I was hoping Steve would change colors. My mom's betta is a beautiful shade of dark blue. He is also a massive betta. He is about four times the size of Steve (in my avatar). I am talking about his actual body size and not his fins. His fins are super long. I hope Steve gets to be that big some day :D

Your mom's betta may be a King betta. They're really big with shorter tails.
