Thank you SO much for all your imput. You all really put my mind at ease. The slap really knocked some sense in me ;)

He ripped the dangling part off and I think the rip on his tail was him nipping to get the dangling part off.

He's now spunky as ever and acting not much differently than before he had the injury.
I've checked all the surfaces in the aquarium... but as far as I know nothing could have caused his injury. I guess I'll just have to file this mystery in the X Files.

After I heard from you all... he lost a similar angled chunk out of his bottom fin (cant remember what its called) I have NO idea how either happened... so, I moved him completely and into another tank. He hasnt sustained any more injuries since. *still just as puzzled as ever*
