had 2 pet hamsters 10 years back or so. one was my brother's other one was mine. the LPS employee said both were male. wrong. she killed my brothers and then eat herself full of the plastice exercise wheel. we wanted another cage for the second but my parents didnt do so. she ate the joints to the wheel where it meets the running barrel. but never ate into the barrel, they couldve taken a spin in it if they wanted. they were fun though. one loved to burrow under the wheel while the other tried running on it. we just loved to play tweety bird and silverster with them when they climbed onto the roof of the cage so they were upside down. we found it funny to push their toes off until they couldnt stay up there. we were around 15 yrs old then so we didnt know too much on hamsters.

nel, that's too bad about your hamsters. :( I just don't trust pet store employees. They're just employees, not really animal experts per se.

DQ, I'm glad it stopped raining. It's hazy here, air quality is awful. Typical California.

Diablo, an AquaClear 20 might be a bit strong for a 5g. AquaClear 20s are rated for up to 20 gallons. I don't know how it will work but I definitely wouldn't put a betta in there with that strong of a filter.

I was going to get a Fluval U1 filter, which is 65 GPH, and had low flow, but it's 33$ 0.0 and I need something super quiet, cause it's in my room. I need very odd conditions to sleep.

I recommend the Marineland Duetto 50. I have one and it's really quiet if you position it so the outflow is just above the water. I got mine at Petco. It was about $25, I think. Otherwise, the only other filters I can think of would be too noisy because they all bubble.

thank you Sakura. at that age we never did get too affected by the loss of the hamsters. too many distractions took our attention else where.
