Birds go through pure torture. I watched an episode of chimp Eden on animal planet where they were out in charge of some 1000-2000 African Gray youngsters. Being flown out the country illegally, they were discovered and sent to the chimp rescue (best place to take them really). The poor babies, some of them were babies, had no feathers. They kept em a few days, released the healthiest looking ones that could fly, recaptured the ones that actually weren't as healthy as they seemed, and continued to nurse them.
Anyways, you can imagine, smuggling birds? Dark crates with no ventilation. Can't imagine how you'd keep them quiet.
Our captive bird gene pool is huge, breeders register and track family trees. We have no need to import more of these animals since everything is well managed.
