I'm not a subscriber of the "replace the media every month" club but I do rinse the filter media at least once a month, sometimes more especially in my planted tank. Other than that, I leave the filter alone too. Except with my AquaClears, because if you don't clean the impeller every few weeks they play dead.
Hehe that was me!
Even when I rinse it weekly it would turn the water black. I have a beautiful brown biofilm all over the cartridge, more like bioblob. Except the meshy thing started disintegrating so I don't want to clean it anymore. O___O I gotta find a filter sponge for it.
I have an aquaclear filter running too and I haven't had a problem with it yet. Granted there's 6 shrimp in 20 gallons in that tank so I guess not much goes through it. xD Posted via Mobile Device
Yep, well from what I read it's a glob of bacteria working together decomposing stuff so it can't be that bad. I've never had any nitrite/ammonia problems so good enough for me.
But I think I have to start stirring the sand twice a week because it's getting crazy.
Also, decided that my next fish tank will be for noble gourami. :3
If I find some. D: Posted via Mobile Device
I was looking at those today! Aquabid has them, but golly max 6.5 pH is crazy!
There's no noble gourami on aquabid right now, not that it matters because I doubt they'd be able to ship to Canada. The nobles are nice because they can take up to 7.5, so I can just use an RO mix with em. Plus they like cooler water too.
Sucks though because I don't know anyone who's kept em. Byron told me he bought 3 licorice gourami (my other fave) and only one survived, all the rare gourami just suck at adapting to tanks and you gotta feed em live foods. :( Posted via Mobile Device
Just finished water changes on all the 3gal and under tanks and finally got the airpump/gang valve to work so I can filter both Professor Plum and Sherman in a way that means I can still sleep at night.
I am never going to keep this many male bettas again unless I have a barracks system.
